Just because the weather has cooled down doesn’t mean your chicken has to. Salt, spice and crunch are a couple elements that many people look for when finding the perfect chicken. And thankfully, in Edmonton there’s many places to try.
Here is my top favourite places for hot fried chicken in Edmonton.
Flirty Bird (7904b 104th St.)
Flirty Bird is famously known for its Nashville-style hot chicken, and they boast the spiciest chicken in town. There are six different spice levels to choose from. From the “no flirt” option, which has no spice, to the “scorchin flirt” that is beyond spicy. When I went to try the scorchin’ flirt, the employee said there’s a warning label and he has to warn customers before eating it. Let me tell you: that spice was so strong, the spice was stuck on my tongue for over an hour, no matter how much water I drank. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have it again. The chicken itself was well cooked, but the spice was unbearable. So unless you’re an avid spice eater, maybe go down a level. I would not recommend this for the inexperienced.
SFC Seoul Fried Chicken (10145 104 St. NW)
This is a great place if you want something a little juicier with less spice. With their chicken delivered to them fresh every morning, and marinated for 12 hours per day, you can ensure you’re getting an amazingly flavourful experience when trying Seoul Fried Chicken. The SFC BBQ chicken is the spiciest chicken on the menu. The flavor of the chicken is excellen–juicy and crispy. The serving size is generous and there is basically no bone. My taste buds were taken on a journey rich with notes of smokiness, spice and juiciness. Definitely worth a try.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (10188 109 St. NW)
Known for its delicious fried chicken sandwiches, this is a great place for spicy lovers that want something on the mild side. One of the spiciest items on the menu is the Ghost Pepper Wings. It’s marinated for 12 hours in an exotic blend of herbs and spices. This was probably my favourite chicken of the three. I loved this breaded chicken, and it was cooked to perfection. The spice wasn’t unbearable but still prominent enough to give you that kick. I loved how juicy it was and you could literally see the steam come out of it with every bite.
The bottom line
Spicy fried chicken is a dish everyone can agree on. All in all, each chicken had its unique way of standing out from the many other chicken restaurants in edmonton. These were my favourite that I have tried so far.
