We’re Hiring a Nugget Newspaper Production Designer!
The NAIT Students’ Association (NAITSA) is looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual to join our Nugget Media production team! This passionate, creative individual will have experience and skill in digital, print, and publication graphic design.
The NAIT Nugget Newspaper Production Designer will work with students to compile and design a publication that is produced bi-weekly. The specific goals and responsibilities assigned to this position are subject to change but shall be based on the overall responsibilities listed below.
The first few issues will be produced during a training/transition phase with our out-going Production Manager. This will allow for learning Nugget production processes and getting to know the systems. The training/transition period will involve a lower rate of contract pay, until the Media Operations Manager deemsthe selected applicant is qualified for the role.
The NAIT Nugget is a student-run newspaper that started in 1964, to deliver unique student content that is not available from other media sources. Reporting to the Media Operations Manager, this position has the following overall responsibilities:
– Plan, design, and create each issue of The NAIT Nugget with a student team & the Media Operations Manager.
– Develop layouts and production design to continually be improving the visual appearance of the newspaper.
– Manage the flow of incoming advertisements, to be published in print & online.
– Help read over articles for finishing & formatting. Some copy editing may be required at times.
– Work with various internal staff to make sure students have all materials in on time.
– Send the paper out to the publisher on time for the print deadline.
– Maintain, organize and update archives of projects on group servers.
Education: Post-secondary diploma or degree in a graphic communication or related field. As well, some educational experience in English would be an asset.
Skills: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other computer assisted design software.
Comfortable working in a very fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
Possess a passion for design and creating a visually appealing newspaper.
Willingness to take design direction and work in a collaborative environment.
Exceptional communication and organizational skills, and strong attention to detail.
Excellent written & verbal skills in English.
Copy editing skills are an asset.
Working knowledge of print production processes.
The NAIT Nugget Newspaper Production Designer is a contract position. The position offers a flat rate of $1500 per issue with 13 to 14 issues in the school year between August and April. Each issue is approximately 16-32 pages long. During training/transition phase, the position offers a flat rate of $500 per issue.
