New Year, new me?
As we enter a new year, 2015, we are surrounded by people who are making New Year’s resolutions and promises to be the best they can be, due to it being a new year. A new year is believed to be a new opportunity, another chance, if you will. A new year is a perfect starting point. It’s a new number to write on the date line of your documents, it’s smack dab in the middle of the coldest time of year, and it’s right after we just pigged out for two weeks straight. OK, so these aren’t really points that make any difference as to whether people should make positive changes in their lives or not, and that is exactly my point. I never said you had to agree but I think that New Year’s resolutions are dumb.
“New year, new me,” is what people like to say. I say that every day is the perfect starting point and if you need to procrastinate until the next year, you aren’t making sustainable and effective changes. The best thing about every day is that it’s another chance. A new day is another chance to wake up and smile because you get to see the sunrise, and you have 12-15 hours to do everything you can to enjoy not only the people around you, but yourself.
Diets, stress cuts, alcohol avoidance and gym trips should not be for the New Year, but for you. In my opinion, your mind is everything. Once you change your mind, you change your life. There is nothing else that will get you to your destination but yourself. These goals are not long lasting and permanent unless they are on your own terms. You must enjoy every aspect of your life in order to feel good about these positive changes, and to make them last. That’s the thing, these changes are not for you, they are for the sake of a new round of 365 days. Improvements should be a part of your very being, so you must become them in order for them to be successful.
I personally do not make New Year’s resolutions; instead I take life as it comes. I take steps to better myself every single day and I speak about them. I believe positivity will save the world and if it is the only thing I surround myself with, I have already made my life as positive and healthy as it can be. Life is ever changing and if I were to wait until the new year to make positive changes in my life, I would be severely behind and they would be null and void by the time I accomplished them. I make these resolutions every day, every week, every month and, if one may happen to fall on the first of January, then that would be quite the coincidence now, wouldn’t it!
